Why is a Design Phase important to your construction project?

You might be asking yourself do I need a design phase for my construction project. In this blog, we’ll help you determine when a design phase is important, discuss  what type of projects you should do a design phase for, and a little bit more about our process.

What are the benefits of a design phase?

A design phase helps you envision your construction project and helps bring it to life. Imagine with me you want to build your dream sunroom or outdoor bar or kitchen area. Looking at Pinterest boards can help you figure out what your space would look like, but sometimes, having your specific dream come to life in front of you makes it so much more real.

Here are a few benefits of investing in a design phase:

Renderings can help push permits through your township or HOA. Filing for an HOA permit can require a lot of details so a design phase with detailed renderings can help you get your project approved more smoothly.

A design phase can also have you on the same page with your contractor. I’m a detailed and visual person so having something that helps me envision the final product really helps me get on board with cost, timeline and so on. Construction can sometimes be unpredictable so take control with designs that will help you and your contractor stay on the page.

If you have a personality like mine, having designs to refer back to can help you stick with the long timeline, it can help you with the messy job site and keep you excited as you and your contractor march towards the finish line.

When do you need a design phase?

Not all projects are the same. Some projects require very detailed designs and renderings, it requires multiple moving pieces and maybe even multiple contractors to bring your project to life. For example, a full kitchen remodel would require detailed designs, from cabinet placement, to outlet placement and more. It would be so important to invest in a design phase then.

An example of a project where you could go without a design phase would be a shed. We build so many, so often that you would have pictures of sheds to refer to. Our sheds are built from best materials and are specifically designed.

But let’s talk about outdoor living, Lincoln Built’s speciality. Let’s say you want to build a sunroom. We’d recommend you invest in a design phase for a project like that. You could get as detailed as deciding where the outlets go, the door placement, or even the windows. Or you could go with a design that helps you envision the aesthetic of the sunroom. Either way, a design phase would be helpful for a project that can take 4-6 weeks to complete.

So there you have it! A design phase is important for certain projects where you need details to get approval from your township or HOA, to get on the same page with your contractor and to bring your dream project to life through beautifully designed renderings.
